This work will be in a new show themed Pattern at Confluence Gallery, Twisp, WA. The exhibit opening reception is February 22, from 5-7pm, and the show will be ongoing from February 18 to April 12. I have written an artist statement for the piece, below:

Blooms on a Far Field

For a few years I have been saving images of flower blossoms from the fields around my studio. From a distance the Yellow Salsify flowers all look the same; a dappling of color among the grasses. But close up, they are all curiously different. They are recorded in color, but I wished to focus on their unique forms, so I converted the color images to black & white, separating them from their distracting color.
Instead of printing all 24 blossoms at once on a large sheet of paper, I printed each blossom individually. In that way, gluing one-at-a-time down to the wood panel, I spent more contact with each one – a mused attempt to meld something stronger into the artwork. The question I ask myself, ‘What does the artist put into the work?’
The gift in the lesson is that from a distance, forms may look the same, a pattern on the field. But when held close, individually and with wonder, their separate true nature is revealed. They are a pattern-less pattern.
