Two Cups on a Shelf
The title belies the fact that a picture is not about the things seen by the eye, but about the feelings that exude from having seen it. Eyes are overrated, and too much mind can be a trickster. My feelings were dark and lonely when I humbly set the actors in front of me. Many viewers will only see two cups and a thistle and wonder what it is about, instead of allowing themselves to take part in their own feelings. For art to communicate, the viewer must strip the disguise from both the art, and herself. Approaching art openly always has an aire of risk.
This image happened just right. I pulled into the beach parking lot, and it was there before me. I pulled out my plastic Holga camera and made the photograph.
